Despite some challenges spring and summer are determined to happen. In GALA, that means gardens, flowers and food!
That means weeding, digging and planting and that means more volunteers are needed. The gardens throughout our neighbourhoods are all pretty mature but they still need care. If you can spend some time to help, we will keep GALA blooming. Many hands make light work. We’ve had some people step up. Katherine M has taken on stewardship of the Westmill Alley, Birch Park has two young people working who want to learn about landscaping for their future.
In the past, we had stewards caring for the two mature pollinator gardens at Powell Park. They have stepped back due to other commitments. If you can join us to do some cleanup that would be appreciated. Please email galaparksandgardens@gmail.com
Our Adopt-a-Park signs have been prepared for the two new gateway signs at Powell Park and Birch Park and installation is pending.
We’ve asked for more garbage cans in Powell Park and requested that the can at the Sundial be replaced. If you see any concerns that need to be addressed, let us know or contact our Adopt-A-Park Program steward through City Hall.
The new Splash Pad at Woodlands Park is on the way. They should start construction later this summer and are targeting 2024 for completion. Our hope is that we can find homes for our neighbours living rough in the encampments by then.
We will continue our monthly meetings at Powell Park Clubhouse throughout the summer on the first Saturday of the month. On long weekends, it will be held the second Saturday. Planning for an outdoor get together/pot luck for the August meeting is underway and if you’d like to help, let us know. I’d love to see a volunteer step up to help lead the meetings so if that interests you please let us know at gala.hub.chair@gmail.com.
The summer is short so please get out and enjoy our parks and gardens and join in all the great activities happening in our community.
