King Street East in Hamilton will be closed to cars for the first ever Open Streets on King event on Sunday June 18th 2023.
A 3.6km stretch of King Street East from John Street to Gage Avenue will be open to pedestrians to walk, run, bike, wheel, skateboard and roller blade with activity hubs and pop-up activations along the way. The event is free including all activities throughout and will run from 10am-2pm. Open Streets provides an opportunity for the public to experience King Street in a unique way, with no car traffic! These events happen all over the world to promote sustainable transportation, physical activity and recreation and a healthy, active lifestyle.
What is Open Streets? Open Streets are programs where the streets are opened to people and closed to cars. People traffic replaces car traffic, and the streets become “paved parks” where people of all ages, abilities, and social, economic, and ethnic background can come out and improve their health.
What area is closed to traffic? King Street East from John Street to Gage Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic. Soft closures will remain in effect along the route at major intersections including John, Wellington, Victoria, Wentworth, Sherman & Gage. Police, security and Open Street volunteers will be on-site to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists through those intersections.
What activities are planned? The event features four activity hubs that are strategically placed at future LRT stops along King Street East. The zones will have activities promoting movement, health and wellness, sustainable mobility, sports and recreation, community and social services. The zones will be at Wellington, Wentworth, Sherman and close to Gage, outside of Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre.
Join an organized bike ride or run led by a community organization or club, cycle to the bike ramps for some up and down fun, tune your bike at the community tune up tent, find Hamilton Public Library’s Bookmobile, stop at a hub for a quick pilates, yoga or dance class, try pickleball, shoot some hoops or kick around a soccer ball in a make-shift court, take a ride in a trishaw bike or just go end to end on King. The activities are family friendly and all free! Save the date for this exciting event in Hamilton.
