By The Streetscape and Beautification Committee
Things may move a little slower on Barton Street but what is important is that they do move! Our Barton Village is on the books for a complete revitalization but not for a few years. In the meantime, our small efforts do make a difference. The Committee is made up of dedicated members who want to see the best for Barton. If you’d like to share your ideas or roll up your sleeves, contact us at beautifybarton@gmail.com.
What’s been happening?
- We’ve secured 12 additional planters and located them in strategic locations to spotlight areas of the Village. They’ve been painted in the vibrant Barton Blue by Green Venture and filled with native pollinator plants. Be patient as these plants that are vital to our environment mature and come into their beauty. Our local businesses have “adopted” nearby planters and will water and weed them.
- The medians have had some repairs done by the City and they are planted with sedum mats; a natural and durable ground cover with pops of colour
- Storefronts are provided with free supplies through our partnership with Team Up to Clean Up and if you want to be involved, let us know. We have volunteer teams on the street cleaning up as well.
- A focused and committed removal of graffiti utilizing the Graffiti Removal Program, graffiti wipes are supplied if needed and for really bad pots, we have a heavy duty removal machine.
- We’ve done a much needed audit of the number and locations of our waste containers and there are changes coming. Litter containers will be installed at all bus stops and the City will swap out the open top litter containers with the closed top Jubilee style containers. This will help with blowing litter. There will be new litter containers at major intersections and locations deemed suitable. Right now it is a staged approach just due to the resources needed to install litter containers.
We are asking our businesses and residents adjacent to the Village these questions:
- Where are the hot spots for dumping?
- Is there a corner or a boulevard that could use some TLC?
- Where would be a good spot for public art?
- What would you like to see?
We are welcoming new members to the committee and if you’d like to join, contact Brenda at beautifybarton@gmail.com
